Funny, I've heard the same said about stadium ice.  I think all ice is
pretty darned hard.

Ok, then I need to figure out which of the old training videos I have that
show young horses being started on ice.  It might have been one by Reynir,
or one by Diddi.  I'm thinking Reynir, but I'm pretty sure I've seen in on
more than one video. Also, that's not the version we hear from the dudes who
promote the Ice Tolts - their slant is usually that "we do it all the time
in Iceland so the horses are used to it.  No big deal."  Different stories
from different people.
