To me, a bit is a communication device.  I tell the
horse to do something, and when he does it, I release
the bit.  This tells the horse he did the right thing,
and will continue to do the right thing to get me out
of his mouth.  These poor horses never get any relief!
 It is truly a testement to their character that they
don't rebel more than a bit of head shaking.
