We only actually were out riding for 4 hours with a 30
minute hold so I think we were going 6.25mph trotting
pretty steady the whole time.
The toughest part was staying in a trot...not for
Deacon, but for me. I was getting tired in the second
loop and I would have liked to walk for a while, but
we had to keep going. I think as his fitness
increases we will be able to canter more and that
would be easier on my abdominal muscles.
The difference between my training rides and the
actual competition is I varied my speed more during
the training rides. I never had trotted for two hours
in a stretch during training. Not to say that you
have to trot for two hours to condition, it is
probably better for the horse to build up
cardiovascularly and vary speeds. Now that I know
what to expect, I will work on my own strength more.
You should try it!

P.S. I had to take lots of advil to make it home
seven hours driving!
