I think that's probably true.

And probably fair.

And most likely the right thing to do.

A running walk is not a pacey tolt.  Wouldn't you want to know that?

In effect, we are protecting you :-).

Would someone want other people to smile and nod to their face, and then 
turn and talk about their inability to distinguish gaits when they own a 
gaited horse?

Not only *you* (you in general) but every other Icelandic Horse owner?  Because 
*you* 
represent other Icelandic Horse owners to other people.  If *you* remain 
ignorant; we may all be labeled that way.

We are on a course of education here.  It's not as though things are being 
made up, or that we say we're going to rename the color "red", and call it 
"blue" from now on.

What is so threatening about learning more?

It's kind of weird that people have been dragged kicking and screaming into 
the world of gaited horse knowledge, but are still around to be dragged! 
There must be something that they like about it, but aren't ever willing to 
admit!

That's cheesy.
