by Tom Dorrance.    I've just put this one on my to-buy list.

As for mane grabbing,  when endurance riders climb, they take a forward
position dependent on the degree of incline.  There a couple of places we go
up where I am standing in my stirrups with both hands wrapped in Hunter's
mane and my face just above his neck.  It scared me in the beginning, but
it's turned into fun.  Of course, the other half of that is politely
lowering seat , legs and hands  when you cross over onto flat ground again
without bumping your horse anywhere.
