That's pretty much how I do it.  I was amazed when I bought nine year old
Hunter and he not only did not stand still but bolted the minute I got my
foot in the stirrup.  I once crossed the barnyard sideways, standing in my
left stirrup.  Now that was fun!

Do you think there was a reason the seller held his bridle while I mounted?

I just started positioning him at the mounting block and having him stand
there - every time we happened to pass it.  After a few times, I would lean
over his back, still with him standing.  When I began to mount, I just
reminded him to stand.  He's good now.

He also didn't stand for dismounting.  Does make one wonder what he was
doing for those nine years.
