Seriously, think of all the ways a horse can express trot: from western pleasure jog, to working trot, to lengthened trot, to medium trot, to extended trot, back to collected trot, thru to passage... I seriously doubt a horse can express pace THAT many ways though, but "animation" or emotion (or lack of) can certainly affect the way a gait looks.
