I think it is more sensible to have an oval than a round pen. It means that horses have a chance to learn to go straight and not just in circles. It is easier for a horse to find their balance when they are not always turning. When I lunge horses I often move them in ovals rather than circles as it is also easier on their joints than always being on a curve.
