We have been mentored by Bev Hoogendyk who owns Creekside Farms with husband Robert. http://www.doublejoy.com/erol/Individual%5CRiderHistory.asp They are both experienced endurance riders. Their program for LD is that the horse conditions by doing the same number of miles per week that he will be doing at a ride. Ideally, these would be divided into a shorter easy day , a climbing day and one long trotting day.
The week after a competition, the horse rests in pasture. I ride Hunter two days during the week and then do a long ride with a group of others on Saturdays. However, the truth is that because some of the others are riding 50's and 75's, Hunter often gets the same training the endurance horses are getting. So he's training for 50's and competing in 25's. They are not putting 50 miles per week in those horses - more like 30 - 35. Nancy
