Well

We breed Jack Russells, and we used to breed Dobermans....so tail
docking has come up with us. I like the look of a docked tail, and
I like the function, with a guard dog it is hard to tell if they are
being friendly or not if the tail is docked short. With Jacks, the
end of the tail is docked, the part of the tail that is very thin,
this leaves a good handle, which I have used to pull them out of
holes with many many times as they go to ground for prey, and in our
rock ground they tend to sometimes get really stuck. Also it
provides for the tail to stand very upright, so when you are hunting
with them you can see them in the brush, this has been very helpful
to us...as I can see if my dog is trying to go down the driveway,
because I see a tail straight up in the air...also I can find them
when I take them out mongoose hunting.......

Now Sally and I did not like docking a tail the typical way.....so we
did some reserch and we found out that some breeders use
banding.....it is the same basic concept of the way we nueter our
young male sheep. You just take a band and put it around the tail
and withing a week the end part of the tail falls of. No puppies
crying from the pain....you can do it at home so as not to stress the
mom dam by going for a vet visit....it really is painless.

Of course, I have had people very upset with me for tail
docking.....I do it a painless way, but I know most are done at a
vets office with a lot of pain.
