Just found this: "The world's newest island was created by a volcanic eruption, 11 miles off the southern coast of Iceland, in 1963. Now, largely due to the restorative powers of guano, the square mile of volcanic rock has been populated by more than a million species of plants and animals, including a healthy colony of earthworms, presumably carried by birds."
