First, congratulations! How mature and ready does he seem to you? Physically and mentally? What's your definition of "light riding"? I'm not opposed to starting one at that age if they are ready. I think Ima will be ready next year this time - IF I have the time. You know your horse better than we do - if you feel comfortable that he's ready, I see no problem...just keep it relaxed and positive and don't rush anything. What have you done with him so far for preparation? Personally, I like to aim for zero remedial work, so that means going slowly, trying to make small enough steps such that there is virtually no backtracking.
