There are three components to gait:  boney structure, musculature, and 
neural wiring.

No "gait gene" has been found, at least so far.

There is a theory that the gaited horse retains some "immaturity" which 
allows him to use his body like foals do (laterally); and sometimes it's a 
weakness in the back that allows for gaitedness.
