Last summer Selur, my trusty trail companion, & I were toelting along the lower side of an open 200 acre field we have ridden across for years. Suddenly, he just stopped dead & refused to go forward. Knowing this horse so well, I got off to look around, but still couldn't see a thing. He refused to even lead forward, so I left him where he was & walked about 10 feet ahead to investigate & promptly sunk down nearly to my knees into mud that was just beneath the surface. Apparently an underground pipe had broken flooding the entire low side of the pasture but because of the Calif. heat, the surface had dried quickly. If Selur hadn't sensed something & stopped,we both could have been seriously injured. I always trust my ponies judgement as they have their 4 feet on the ground & sense more than I do.
