Funny timing, Wanda. I've started or helped start about a dozen horses now. I
haven't worked with Svertla for a couple of weeks for various reasons, but I
went out to work with her a while ago and my friend came over to work with
Maja. I hadn't ground driven Svertla before - everything up to driving, but
not the actual driving. Today was the day.

Svertla is NOT a spooky horse, to put it mildly. You almost never have to worry
about something falling from her back, or a rope getting tangled etc. She'll
just ignore it or plow through it, but it won't worry her. I think those
traits will make her into a heck of an "ain't skeered of nuthin'" trail horse.
Today though, it was a wee bit challenging to keep her attention on me when I
was out of her field of vision and using the driving lines, to keep her moving
forward. For the first time I ever remember her mentioning it, Shirley
suggested that I might want to get a long Parelli "carrot stick" to use to cue
her. I did, and I couldn't help but think of what you'd written about Dagur
earlier. It HELPED Sverlta to have a tiny touch from behind, but of all the
horses I've started or helped start, she's the only one I've used the "driving
whip" with.

Our Mac was one of the horses who were scared of whips. I would never use one
with him, because you could see the fear in his eyes. Because he was such a
tenderhearted guy, there was never any need either.
