That is an excellent idea and one I've been meaning to adopt. I think I will braid the horse's ID tag into his/her mane so that if for some reason, natural disaster or whatever, the horse is found somewhere without a saddle, it can still be identified.
In the winter I carry a cell phont in my pocket. In the summer when I don't have pockets, it goes on the saddle. I took a very bad fall a couple of years ago when out riding alone. Fortunately I had the cell phone with me. I fractured two vertebrae and couldn't get up. I lay on my back in the neighbor's abandoned barnyard talking on the phone until the ambulance arrived. I never want to do that again, but it would have been a very long time until someone found me if I couldn't have called for help. The horse ran home. Nancy
