I left the house last saturday for 3 hours to go and help some friends at
their tobacco farm. When I returned I went out to feed as usual. I check my
horses all the time when I'm home, mind you...
I was putting the bowls down when up walk the horses and to my shock my
older gelding (23 years) appeared with a basketball sized wound in his leg
between his knee and shoulder in the muscle...very deep, very wide. The skin
was hanging open and 1/2 the muscle was hanging out torn. The other side on
his chest had a long gash as well. I dropped everything and panicked because
he was walking but quivering like he was spaced out. It was a holiday
weekend (figures) and I prayed the vet on call was available close by. He
was. He came out and we did a 2 hour cut and sew job on him together. He is
walking but I will most likely not be able to ride him again. I feel so bad
for him because I rescued him, skin and bones. I hate for this to happen. I
walked the pasture for an hour looking for some clues and all I can think of
was that he got caught in a gate. no blood trail, no good evidence why.
Sigh.... my poor old boy is a trooper though.
