We too built a "bat house", but they seem to prefer the eaves in our front entry to the house. Never had any issues other than having to hose down the front entry & walls more frequently . They leave a lot of cicada carcasses as well as bit of poop out there, but boy do they ever take care of the bugs!!
We also have gopher & king snakes on our property which not only deal with rodents, but keep away rattle snakes. In our area, we have seen a huge influx of ground squirrels which destroy fence posts by undermining them & leave our trails riddled with holes that are dangerous. It's probably due in part to all the development which has driven away many of our hawks, owls & coyotes the past 5 or 6 years. We hardly have any open land left in the Santa Ynez Valley which was part of why we moved here 13 years ago., but that's another topic!!! Kaaren
