Oh good grief!  I would have hoped that old idea was dead and buried.

I had a cowboy tell me once that if I was going to kick a horse in the
belly, be sure to use the side of my foot, not my toe.  He wasn't kidding.

Another old cowboy taught  me to tighten the girth slowly,  one notch at a
time and let the horse take a step or two before I mounted.  Now that guy
was both cowboy and horseman.
