What I used were small leather strips with a buckle that came with a
kit to add a dropped noseband to a dressage bridle. I never used thhe
noseband but these came in gandy for this purpose. I think you would
need something sturdier than a string. What I was going to use before
I found these pieces were spur straps and cut them off. I bought a
box of miscellaneous leather pieces at a sale for $2.00 and it was a
great buy - I have used more of that stuff for making things than I
can begin to tell you. It had stuff in it like the dropped noseband
kits, a bunch of spur straps (what you thread through the spur to hold
it on), rawhide pieces, broken reins, etc. Don't ever throw away
misc. pieces of leather - you never know when they might come in handy
for rigging up something else.

What a horse does under compulsion is done without understanding,
and there is no beauty in it either, any more than if one should
whip or spur a dancer.
