Well really a farrier should have gone to school or taken some sort
of course....and we charge $40 per trim, $10 extra for a draft and
$10 extra for a founder....take into account that the farriers time
includes traveling to your place, upkeep on the rig (We just put in
over $3000 in repair costs due to using our truck for work) rasps,
tools, and maintaining them.....its a hell of a lot cheaper than
going to a mechanic, I can tell you that. They get the $90 + per
hour BOOK time (which is not real time) plus they make another almost
100% profit form the parts.....
hopefully you have a farrier with an understanding on what a
balanced hoof is for you individual horse......
Our full day of work takes us about 8-12 hours....and we want our day
to bring in $500 minimum for a day.....well you add that up, minus
the expenses and you will see that farriers do not make $80 an hour,
unless they have a big barn VERY close to home, or are on a racetrack
with the heavy duty stress of that.....and that just makes up for the
other days where you travel everywhere and spend gas.
A good farrier is worth the $40 bucks, one that returns calls, shows
up on time and does a good job. We would have been willing to pay
that and more before Sally went to school, but no amount of money
could get anyone to show up and then keep a shoe on or not lame our
horses.......Karen has stated several times that the farriers in her
area are great....a good place to move mabye if you have horses.
