My Dad and his six brothers and three sisters grew up on California's Mojave desert during the Depression. They had a rain barrel. It was still in place within my memory, probably in 1950 or so. They did not have indoor plumbing and they joked around about who would "water" the tomatoes and who would hit the squash. I've never known for sure if they were joking or not.
