Well, since my connection is SLOOOOW, I do not try to look at the you
tube sites....so I have missed this phenomenon....however, Karen is
so correct in all this....what can you really tell about a horse by a
bad picture?
Well what we say is this about Icelandics...
To appreciate them (at first) you have to Ride them or at least spend
time with them to appreciate their cool emotional steadiness..
Sally's first impression of her favorite mare was not very good...she
is short, very fuzzy, and, well, a little funny looking (see the
recently posted picture of Sally and Kim on the trail. The pinto is
the mare I mean). But once she rode her, well, it was divine love.
We have noticed that in order to like this breed you have to set
aside what typically americans think is a beautiful horse....the
first impression my not be the best one, or the correct one, unlike a
lot of people who own, say, Arabians...that's a beautiful horse, and
we know a lot of people who own them and love to look at them.....but
really do not ride them! We own 1 Quarab, and he is a beautiful
horse. Sally only rides him to do Cattle and Ranch work.
Anyway, looks do not tell the whole story.....Bylgja sounds much like
Etill...perhaps not much to look at to the uneducated eye, but we
have had many people want to buy her even though she has never been
for sale and never will be...she charms you on the ground, then under
saddle, the kids in the neighborhood just love her, and the adults
love her after riding her. At first they wonder if their feet will
touch the ground if they ride her, she is short, and wonder if such a
short pony can handle adult weight , after they ride her, they Get
it....she can handle it, can they?
We just think that people who are into this breed are a little more
accepting, intelligent and openminded, people who can look past the
looks of something, and appreciate something beneath the surface.
Also, it takes a confident personality to go against the crowd and
ride them 'with the big guys'. Give yourselves a hand, Icelandic
owners!!!
The people here who own Icelandics ride them, hang out with them and
enjoy them a lot, fuzzy, short and all!
