barn sourness is not something to take lightly... i went on a ride once with a 10 year old girl whose parents had just bought her a new horse. she was way ahead of me and stopped and all the horses passed her. I was last and I smiled and said 'are you having fun?" and kept going and then realized hmmm, she had a very odd stricken look on her face. Then this lady who had sold it to her went back to see what was wrong. The kid got off and the woman got on to try and make the horse go and it reared and fell over and broke her arm so bad it had to have bolts put in it.
Whenever I go outside my gate at home my horses never want to go, none of them. i dont know why. They are fine on any trail ride. They are not buddy or barn sour, but at home, in my driveway, they just act like they cant leave. I ride them up and down it going further each time. I reward them when they soften and accept by turning them back for the barn. If they wont go forward soft and willing I make them go until they will, then reward with turning back, going further each time. But the other day I let my daughter ride Tivar and he was fine as long as I was walking with them and then when she turned him back for the barn she let him just go and he took off at the trot and when I hollered for her to slow him he showed his tail a little bit :) But when we trailer off they are all just fine as can be. brats.
