Whisper has been off her supplemental feed for 2 weeks now, getting only 2 servings of alfalfa hay and 1 serving of pure grass hay a day. Today I rode her out with only 1 other horse, Sharon, my friend and instructor on her 23yo retired eventer. Whisper did almost perfect! She was relaxed, rode side by side (only pinned her ears a couple of times at Starman), we trotted side by side several times, she never got race brain or considered airs above the ground, we seperated different paths around a stand of tamarasks, then walked home alone after Sharon and Starman went up their own driveway. To top off a wonderful ride, we even passed the garbage truck by ourselves on the way to our own house! She was sooooo good, after untacking her, I told her she earned her bug (the massager) and after I started her massage, we shared breath. Whether it was the feed, or the larger group that made her a butthead, I don't know, but now it's time to work on getting mutual respect and trust back in our relationship. I think we are on the way!
