I think Janice has a good point and it gave me another idea. Could you go out with your car or ATV and plant a bucket of carrots a mile from home and then ride out with another horse and "find" it? You could put it in a different spot each time in the hope that he would learn that going out is really lots of fun.
Our Twist is barn sour and I confess I find it annoying, although he's a wonderful horse in every other way. I just ride him with other horses when I can. If I don't have someone to ride with and choose to ride Twist, I get off and walk him past his sticking point, which is always at about the same spot. I have tried anticipating his stopping and started urging him into a more forward mindset, but the place where he stops intimidates me because it is in an uphill stretch of trail. He either runs downhill backwards or wheels on his hind legs and does a 180. Since he's a rather awkward horse, it always feels like he's going to fall down. Telling this story so you won't think we're picking on you. Everyone who has ridden very much has probably ridden at least one barn sour horse. Nancy
