Knowing the horse quite well I wouldn't say that you are really missing
anything or doing anything wrong.  I would just say that in terms of
preference of gait that the canter is last and with a strongly 5-gaited
horse it is not unusual to find that the canter is easier to get when you
are in a half-seat - when you sit down that is one of the signals to go into
pace.  

Bjalla was one of Christine's favorite horses and she thought she would do
quite well showing, as would Atli.  I think doing some competitive trail
rides will be great for them and you will have a lot of fun.
