i thought it sorta reinforces the commonplace opinion that ponies are mean. I have always heard that. i have heard people say they were thinking of getting their child a pony and heard people respond "oh dont do that, go ahead and get a small horse, ponies are mean." have you ever heard that?? i think its because they are smart. Mules and donkeys have a similar reputation for being stubborn or biting and kicking (kicks like a mule, bites like a mule, these are sayings) and mules and donkeys are smart. I dont think they will so readily put up with intolerable stuff from humans like many many horses will. Of course I am generalizing, but overall, I think ponies and mules and donkeys are less tolerant of pain and abusive treatment. altho some will take it til they die, or break down physically, like horses, which is sad... and then of course you have some horses that won't take pain or abuse at all and will fight it.
