I had almost exactly the same experience - my first Boa Gilbert was a sweetie, very affectionate, he would curl up with me wherever I went and actually really liked the cats and the one-winged road casualty tawny owl I had at the time. Then the next one I had was satan spawn, really evil. He had to be fed with tongs or he would bite me every time, yet he loved men. Snakes can be weird.
