I used a Dr. Cook's bitless bridle on my gelding for about two years.
I went back to a bit because we were having bolting problems. (I
don't know if the bitless was to blame or not, because he bolts with a
bit too). After a few bolts, I was advised to go back to a bit. I
use a three-piece jointed snaffle with eggbutt rings. I am told that
it is one of the mildest bits out there.
For those of you who are familiar with the Dr. Cook bitless, do you
think that in general it is a more comfortable option for the horse
than a bit? I always assumed that it was, but the nose band is
supposed to be secured somewhat tightly according to the instructions.
I'm wondering if the nose band is less comfortable than a bit would
be. I know the rider makes a big difference, so let's assume for the
comparison that the rider has quiet hands.
Any opinions out there on the Dr. Cook?
-- By the way, a trainer worked with my horse and me, so the bolting
issue is much improved! I'd like to go back to the bitless if that
truly is the more comfortable tool for my horse.
