when my childhood pony died, my father wanted us to save the skin. danny was a poa, with beautiful and unusual markings -- silver in front with white spots, white in back with black spots. i was appalled and said something basically unforgivable to my father (a ww2 refugee) and nothing came of it. but i suspect the use of horsehides reflects a kind of "waste nothing" attitude at some level. i can respect that, though it's not what i wanted for my own pony's remains. --vicka
