Nancy It sits just behind the cantle at an angle. What little weight is in in is held off the horse by the d rings. A pack on a Western saddle sits behind the seat but on the leather skirt that sticks out. Since English saddles don't have skirts these packs have a fleece or soft bottom where they touch the horse.
