I rode my first Icelandic bareback for two years as I didn't have a saddle which fitted him. Did my balance no end of good! I enjoyed this article but would take exception with the statement: "If our lives depended on the freedom of our horses' backs, we would have thrown out the saddle long ago." There are, even today, cultures which still depend on the horse (for instance the nomadic Mongolians), who do use saddles.
