I've often wondered that. In most of the USA, lakes and ponds don't freeze deep enough to support human skaters, much less the weight of horses. It seems just bizarre to me to have to rent an arena to ride in a way that isn't good for the horses, when there are often good alternative ways to ride. Karen Thomas, NC
