I spoke to the vet about Corries blood test results. She is anaemic. I
think she is a lot less anaemic then when I got her. In theory with
COPD (heaves) I would expect a higher count to compensate for the lack
of O2. That's how it is in humans. I am usually very good at guessing
Haemaglobins and I would have estimated 8 g/dl initially and now it has
come up to 11 g/dl. That would certainly account for her stumbling and
it would be compounded by not being able to breathe. The anaemia is not
iron deficient so I would guess it's not due to blood loss from worms.
She has a macrocytosis (deficiency of vitamins) and anisocytosis
(indicates new cells being made). I have been prescibed a large
container of restore which looks like herbal or homeopathic remedy.
Her raised triglyceride reflects her recent lack of exercise. It could
be the start of cushings but unlikely with a low glucose. Also she is
shedding her winter coat normally.
She has had two months rest which I have been feeling guilty about. Now
I realise she probably wasn't fit to be ridden. She is already a lot
better. I am happy to gently start her on a fitness programme and get
another test in one or two months. I lunged her yesterday and she
didn't trip once. She appeared to enjoy it. I think she needed the rest
to recover. I am looking forward to riding the new Corrie.
