Many people who mix their own food for their diabetic dogs feed yogurt as a protien source. I know they feed plain, low fat to keep sugar down and high fat for diabetic dogs puts them at risk for pancreatitis. I get a bit frustrated with vets and dog food companies with their prescription diets. If you really look at the ingredients, calorie content, carb content etc. they are not well suited for diabetic dogs. The carbs content is high, the glycemic index of the ingredients is way high. The main ingredient is corn meal or grain products. The calorie content is too low. Poor Shelby was being fed what she was supposed to be getting or about as much as a small dog can eat but was losing weight. Started looking at the calorie content and realized that she wasn't getting enough calories. Small dog food is more calorie dense. Vets and doctors in general tend to believe the info given by the drug and food companies without knowing the whole story and researching all the negative that are there, that the drug/food companies don't tell them. Sorry for my little rant.
