Do you just pick out any hole?
I'd pick out a hole with a fresh dirt plug and dig out until you find a two way tunnel. My dogs do a pretty good job of catching gophers near the surface -- they can apparently hear them tunneling and then just start digging along the lateral tunnel (makes a mess) until they catch up with the gopher and then grab it and toss. My Lab has gotten two big ones in the last month that we know of. The mini Australian Shepards generally work more like cats and just wait at the gopher hole and snap them up as they emerge. The first catches were accidents, but once we lavished praise on the dog for that first catch, gopher catching (ditto ground squirrels and mice) became their "work" and they do it with the enthusiasm of a working breed with a job.
