There is no reason that mares and geldings can't get along. For years - when we had under 30 horses we kept our herd integrated as did my sister Susan. There were very few problems. We have found that with a larger herd - 100+ keeping the geldings and mares separated means that it is very easy to add new horses to the herds because when they are mixed the so often form little mini groups. It also means that we can keep stallions within the herd most of the time so they have more company. Robyn Hood
