There is a very important lesson to be learned here: ALWAYS LISTEN TO YOUR
HORSE!
I need to have that engraved on my forehead. I worked and worked to get the
fussy-mouthed Hunter to accept a snafflee bit, then a kimberwick. I finally
gave up and switched to a bitless arrangement. He's the first horse I have
ever not been able to ride in a snaffle. Last year I noticed he had a nasty
scar running vertically up from the tip of his tongue. This year in March,
his dentist pointed out a second truly horrendous scar running horizontally
across his tongue farther up. No wonder the poor thing couldn't get
comfortable in a bit. He'd come close to having his tongue cut off some
time in his past.
