Virginia,
Take heart! Once the dragonflies and bats (you might
want to put up somebat houses around the edges of the
fields to encourage them and keep them out of the
run-in)come out the black flies will drop back to a
dull roar so that daytime walks will be possible.

Evening is the worst time to go out but late night is
better(they swarm but don't bite). In a week or two
it won't be as bad during the day.

Clean up any places where the bugs can hide(old
leaves, they LOVE cedar trees, brush piles) around
where you like to walk. And you might look into
getting some "mosquito dunks" for any standing water
(like your pond) to minimize that pest. Its not a
chemical but a mosquito larva inhibitor.

Spring is so wonderful when its too cool for the
bugs...black flies don't bite if it gets below 50
degrees. They prefer dark colors, too, so wear light
colors.

Don't forget to check your horses midline underneath
everyday, cuz black flies prefer them to us!

AABF(armed against black flies)
Ashley
