a good fly sheet is the saxon stretch mesh with belly band and neck peice. If it catches on something it stretches and doesnt rip, is light and cool, and Tivar does not seem to mind it at all. fly sheets cant be too big or they will get a back leg caught in them kicking at flies,. teev is huge and wears a 66. Also, maybe fly predators or feed thru fly control will work with black flies? We dont have those here. Which amazes me there is an insect we actually dont have... my horses have to wear fly masks and sometimes will actually reach for it when i go to put it on like they want it on them. War paint is good to smear around the eyes and belly and I put rubber gloves on and stroke their legs with fly stuff. also i use just plain old Off insect repellant sometimes... we have yellow flies here, sounds like as miserable as black flies, and i use poridon for them. Janice-- even good horses have bad days sometimes.
