I think Bart is simply one of those "old soul" horses that was born tame to
some degree. He's a phenomonally gentle fellow to have been taken in just
nine weeks ago. He's had no training - just the necessary handling to treat
his wound. They put the halter on him when he was sedated for the injury,
and it's been on since. Tonight I was cleaning his stall and he came
quietly up and stood near me - not in my space, but when I turned around, he
reached his nose out and gently touched me. He hasn't had his halter
removed since it was put on, and he doesn't lead yet. We set up corral
panels that go from the front of the barn to the round pen, so I'll have a
safe way to get him out for play/work time, so that I can work on halter
training. I have a lot of work to do with him, but it's obvious that he
wants to be cooperative. He's really sweet, but I'm not anxious to try too
much in a 12x12 stall - it's just too small. My goal is to put him in with
the geldings when he's suitably halter trained, and will come up to be
caught. I'm not sure that will work out, but I hope so.
