As part of our normal operation, we track aircraft fleet movements. I have a check set up in icinga that looks at the data received to make sure we have gotten data "recently" and notify me if we stop getting data (hopefully before our ops people notice and start screaming at me that they can't do their job). The difficulty is that there are differing acceptable thresholds depending on the time of the day - during the day (except on holidays) we are flying fairly constantly, so if we haven't seen any data in five or ten minutes, that's probably an issue. At night we may not fly much at all, so we may not see any data for several hours without there being an issue. What is the best way of dealing with this? So far, I've come up with two options:

1) Use multiple checks with different check_period directives and warning/critical thresholds. This would produce the desired result, but with twice as many checks specified, which will clutter up the display if nothing else.
2) Use the notification_period directive. Avoids duplicating checks, but runs the risk of not being notified if something goes wrong at night. I'm assuming that if the service goes into a critical state while in a non-notification period, I won't then get a notification when it comes out of the non-notification period.

Is there another, better option I'm not thinking of? Perhaps a way to change the parameters passed to the check command depending on time period or the like? Thanks.
