Thank you for bringing this up. In fact this was it. I repeated the
experiment, this time waiting for the parent service to go to Hard
Critical, and observed that once that happened, the dependent checks
behaved as expected. Thanks!

A service or host is considered down/critical if it's in a hard state. I think you can change this behaviour for a dependency with the ignore_soft_states attribute if necessary.

Although, I don't consider it a good idea. I usually "tune" the service objects with retry_interval and max_check_attempts so that the service is in hard state when I am sure it has failed...
