As with anything, there are "a dozen ways to monitor" a system for any given
process...

However, to answer your direct question, you can probably just point
check_nagios at /usr/local/icinga/var/status.dat ... with an expire time of
5 or 6 minutes. You can also use icinga (or a few other processes) as the
process name.

Myself, I'd like just use NRPE to connect from each host and check to see
that the other machine's icinga process is still running. Again, if that is
what your intent is, at least.. Similarly, you can use that to fork off a
check_nagios process to report back to the other system.
