The sample files are just that ... samples. You don't need to use them ...
you can comment most of them out in icinga.cfg. But they give you a good
basis from which to get started. Once you get going, you never need to
install the samples again... myself, I just keep the general sample
releases around in my own source trees, just so I can try to catch any
differences between revisions.
As far as "best practices" go, just remember that Icinga pulls a lot of
what it is from Nagios... so much of what applies there, applies here.
Again, the examples provide a good starting point to build on and move
forward...
Anyway, hope that somehow helps... I (as well as the rest of the list)
