Hi!
* AFAIK there is no rule of thumb on sizing your monitoring infrastructure,
however there are some baselines and algorithms on calculating the needed
resources for Icinga core and the other modules as well (I actually know
about inGraph DB sizing).
* There is the NSCA plugin for sending passive check results. With the
others you mentioned these should be enough for most monitoring situations
* There is a "Redundant and failover monitoring" section in the docs (
http://docs.icinga.org/latest/en/redundancy.html). Icinga 2 will support
clustering and HA out-of-the-box. Using Icinga 1.8.x, I'm experimenting
with MariaDB Galera cluster as DB backend [using inGraph, icinga-web] (3
nodes, geographically distributed) and Pacemaker Cluster. Having 3 master
nodes (these form a pacemaker cluster) with icinga-web and a few core-only
instances for distributed monitoring (mostly for monitoring host/services
in separated and heavily firewalled VLANs)
