I'd create a logical link. This way you don't have to change plugins which sometimes have hard coded paths.

Thank you, you pointed me in the right direction.  I had the commands setup correctly, but I noticed in NagiosQL that the commands were prefixed with $USER1$/, so I went looking for that definition and found that the resource.cfg file was pointing to a nagios-plugin folder which didn't exist.  I had installed nagios-plugins from source, but I can't seem to locate where they installed to, so I just changed $USER1$ to point to /usr/local/icinga/libexec/ and now things appear to be working.
 
Should I pursue getting it to work with nagios-plugins?  Thanks again for your help.

Unless you've defined check_ping in commands.cfg to have all the required parameters for the plugin, you have to pass some parameters to the check_command line.

If you're unsure, post the contents of the define command { } for check_ping
