National Sloop Champs 2005
Gull Lake Yacht Club
Western Michigan University and Michigan State University
Day One:
Day one began with light winds, ranging from 0 to 6 knots. The weather was
sunny with temperatures ranging from 40 to 60 degrees. Racing was called at
3:30 p.m., due to lack of winds after one race was completed. After race
one, UC Irvine in first place, Texas A&M Galveston in second place, and
Harvard University finishing third.
Competitors attended a dinner friday night sponsored by the International
Star Class, where speaker Mark Mendelblatt gave a history of his sailing
career from his years in collegiate sailing at Tufts University up to his
Star Class sailing today, including his Laser Olympic Campaign in 2004. He
also provided an interesting story of his experience sailing at the Sloop
Champs at Gull Lake Yacht Club in 1993 for Tufts.
Day Two
Racing began at 10 am, with sunny skies, temperatures in the 40's and winds
ranging from 0 to 6 knots. Three windward leeward courses were completed
before competitors took a break for lunch. Wind is expected to increase and
three more races are planned to be completed.
More updates are posted on the Sloop Championship website as they happen.
