2006 ICSA/Gill National Coed Dinghy Championship Harvard Leads After Day One Charleston, South Carolina (May 31, 2006) - While sailors from 18 colleges around the country were ready to kick it into high-gear, a developing weather system slowed action on day one at the ICSA/Gill National Coed Dinghy Championship. While that delay was brief, in mid-afternoon a strong ebb tide and east wind made rotating between races a challenge which forced competitors to sail back to the dock to change out between A and B-Divisions. After sailing a number of races close to the Ravenel Bridge, the race course was moved closer to the observation barge much to the delight of the large spectator contingent. Harvard University ended the day in first-place with 44 points, their combined score after six races in A-Division and four in B-Division. Georgetown University holds second on 52 points, followed by Tufts University with 64, St. Mary's College with 66, and College of Charleston with 68. Racing resumes Thursday (June 1) and concludes Friday (June 2). Emmy-award winning sailing journalist Gary Jobson (Annapolis, Md.) is filming the championship for a one-hour program - the 2006 ICSA/Gill National Championship - to be broadcast on ESPNU, the network devoted entirely to college sports. The show is set to air June 10, 11, 19, 22 and 29. Visit www.jobsonsailing.com <http://www.jobsonsailing.com/> for local airtimes. BACKGROUND - The ICSA National Championships brings together sailors representing seven North American conferences to compete in three distinctive events. In the Dinghy event, each of the 18 schools (16 that qualified through conference eliminations and two selected at-large) fields a separate A and B Division team. Weather permitting, each division sails eighteen 20- to 30-minute fleet races over three days for a total of 36 races. A team's final score is determined by the combined results of its sailors in A and B divisions. To learn more about ICSA, visit www.collegesailing.org.
